How to Crochet a Flower!

Wow, this has been a project.

First, my daughter (#4) has this black crocheted hat with a green crocheted flower on it (it was a gift from a wonderful YW leader).  I loved it and my daughter wanted me to make more for her in different colors.

Second, I was able to crochet the hat without too much difficulty, but I could not figure out the crocheted flower for the life of me.
Third, I was off to the library to check out crochet books.  Behold! I found a pattern for a crocheted flower.
Fourth, after crocheting one, it was not the same as my daughters, it was floppier and bigger and had larger holes in it (lacier is a good term).
Fifth, from the library book and looking at the flower of my daughters, I came up with a version of my own.  The flower in the above pic is what I came up with.
Sixth, I filmed myself crocheting a flower. Filming and re-learning how to edit video in movie maker was an adventure.  I thought I would easily have this posted on Wednesday (yesterday),  but as you know some things just take so much longer than you ever dream they will!
Seventh, I didn't know how to put video on the blog and I was told to put it in youtube then on the blog.  Eighth, after uploading it to youtube it was rejected because it was 21 minutes long and it only takes a maximum of 10 minute videos.
Ninth, I cut my video into 3 parts to fit youtube's rules.
Tenth, I put the links or url's or whatever on the blog.  I hope it makes sense and I hope the link works!!!

Now for the next part of this ubber posty post.  Here are the written instructions for the crocheted flower.  I should have qualified this sooner, but this project needs basic crocheting skills/knowledge.  There are super youtube videos out there that can teach you how to crochet.

Ch (chain stitch) 6, in the sixth ch from hook, work a sl (slip stitch), ch 4.

Work a sc (single crochet) in the loop, ch 2, work a sc + ch 2 six more times. Join with a sl in 2nd ch of previous chain 4 to form the first round with 8 spokes of the round.

Work a petal in the number 1 space. Petal: sc, ch 1, 2 dc (double crochet), ch 1, sc
There are eight spaces, yet you will only work 5 petals, so work the next 4 petals in space 3, then 4, then 6, and the last (or 5th) petal in space 7. Sl in the first sc from the first petal.

Ch 1, then turn the flower over (the back is now facing you). Insert hook under the "spoke" and work a sl.  Ch 5
Work a dc under the next spoke and ch 2, do the same through each remaining spoke and sl in the third ch of the first ch5.

Ch 1 and turn flower back over to the front.  Fold the petals forward to work the middle layer of petals in the loops you just finished.  Work a petal in each loop. These petals are made by working a sc, ch 1, 3 dc, ch1, sc.  Join with a sl in first sc.

Ch 1 and turn flower to the back again, work a sl in first spoke and ch 6, work dc + ch 3 on remaining spokes, then work a sl in 3rd ch of the first ch 6.  Ch 1 and turn flower to the front.

Work petals (sc, ch 1, 4 dc, ch1, sc) in each loop and join with a sl in first sc.  Fasten off.

GREAT JOB!!! You did it! It's adorable and all done!!!

Another thing I really liked about this crocheted flower is that it didn't need to have the clip glued or sewn on.  You just clip it onto the flower and onto the hat.  Or clip it onto your belt, or handbag, or clothing, or bedroom decor.  Or clip it onto your clipboard :-)

If you are interested in crocheting the little leaf, here is a "how to" video:

Thank you for looking at this very looonnnngggg post! I hope it has been fun and useful (hint: super idea for gift giving!!!)

  3. Hi anonymous,
I don't even know what pdf is. I know, I'm a technological slow poke, but I did just figure out how to leave a comment here for you to answer your question! What can I say it's a beginning.
Anyway, I do know you can probably copy and then paste it into a word type document. That should work. Let me know if you need any help.

  14. Love your blog. A question what type of yarn do you use? I made the first one yesterday, but it turned out very very big and I was wondering how I could make it a little smaller. Thanks so much for posting these videos they are so helpful. I have taught myself to crochet and these are fantastic.

    ReplyDelete
  15. To K and Mariann:
Thank you for your sweet comments and way to go in teaching yourself how to crochet.
About the flowers, I used a "soft" yarn. There are different brands of "soft" type yarn and it is a little thinner than regular yarn. I also used a size "G" hook.
    Keep up the great work!!!
I will soon be doing PDF files, thank you for your offer (I personally love the grandmother part!!!).

I just started making these and I am addicted. Your patterns are so easy to follow and I love how "natural" your videos are...like the phone ringing and dogs nail clicking. I would love to see how you make the leaf for the flowers too if you need another idea for a video. Thank you again for taking the time to do these and share them. kathypinaz@yahoo.com

  26. What is the pattern for the beautiful hat?

    ReplyDelete
  27. Carrie,
The next post I do will be a pattern for the leaf. I found it in a library book that I can no longer get, so I have created my own version. I just need to write it out and take some pics and I will post it for you.
I don't know who crocheted the hat, it was a gift to my daughter. Maybe I'll get that one figured out someday too.
Until then, I'm occupied with some adorable crochet boots. I hopefully will get them posted soon too!!!!

  53. One cute way to attach the flowers is by sewing a button onto the item you want the flower on. An example of this is on the video at:

    I hope this helps :)

  60. I saw your flower and I think it is the prettiest one I have seen, but I am having trouble trying to figure out the stitch you are calling a single crochet, but it isn't! You are pulling through one loop at time instead of both. Why is that? Anyway, I am back for part two of the video again since I am a bit stuck there.

    ReplyDelete
  61. Hi Marcia,
I don't know what I was thinking when I did that video. You are right, I'm not doing a sc, but you may just want to follow what I did and not listen to what I say in the video --- lol!!!

  71. the flower pattern on your blog doesn't give the large centre for button to go through lik when you demo the headband pattern on youtube.

    Can you help?

I have made the headband and it's effective but that button flower pattern is needed too.

    Help

    thank you

    Heidi UK

    ReplyDelete
  72. Hmmm, the flowers used in the video and the blog are the same. The difference might be the size hook, or the type of yarn or the tension you use while crocheting.
To remedy this just buy buttons that are small enough for the flowers to go around.
Or you can add another chain stitch to the beginning ring.
    I hope this helps :)

I've been knitting for a long time and I'm starting to learn crochet with a book written for kids I bought for my daughters that have the basic methods (I recommend all adults - and kids - who want to learn crochet to use simple books written for children, these are the best for starters like me). The reason I wanted to learn crochet was to be able to crochet cute flowers like these to embellish my knitted accessories.
The first part took me a few tries but after 5 or 6 times, I finally started to see and understand what I was doing: good thing I'm stubborn!
